The Honourable Minister of Local Government and Chieftainship, Mr Moshe Leoma led a Lesotho Delegation to Pretoria, South Africa on 23 August 2022 for an event of signing two Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) between the two countries. The first MOU is between The Ministry of Local Government and Chieftainship and its South African counterpart, The Department of Cooperative Governance and its Traditional Affairs, while the second technical MOU is between the Disaster Management Authority and its counterpart, National Disaster Management Centre. This is in line with the existing relations between the two countries under The Joint Bilateral Cooperation Commission (JBCC), which started in 2001.
The MOU between The Ministry of Local government and Chieftainship and the Department of Cooperatives Governance and Traditional affairs is in the area of local governance, including fiscal decentralization and council structures; and the MOU between Disaster Management Authority and the National Disaster Management Centre focuses on the areas such as disaster prevention mitigation, disaster preparedness, disaster response and relief research and training.
The two countries are already working at a technical level, thus, the formal signing of the MOUs is expected to solidify relations and assist the sectors in reaching a bigger milestone.
